City Lights 2020 | Family & Children’s Service March 28, 2020 – 6:30PM
We love our nonprofit friends at Family & Children’s Service! In fact, they hosted our most recent Opening Class Session for Young Leaders Council! They are hosting a spring event, City Lights 2020 – honoring Hunter Atkins & John Steele.
The party will feature a 70s Disco theme with live music by legendary funk band Delicious, dancing, and catering by Johnny Haffner. John Steele and Hunter Atkins will be honored for their community service and support of FCS. It’s a cocktail supper (open buffet; no tables). This makes it easy for partygoers to mingle all night. 70s costumes are encouraged (but not required), and there will be fun surprises throughout the evening.
The event benefits Family & Children’s Service, which serves more than 50,000 of our community’s most vulnerable children and families each year.

No better place to learn more about Social Enterprise than from the experts themselves! Join us for an Impact Luncheon featuring Hal Cato (Thistle Farms), Mike Lenda (The Well Coffeehouse), and Kim Molnar (Second Harvest Food Bank).
This conversation will be led by Michael Woodnorth of Woodnorth Advisory. We will define social enterprise and discuss its benefits for nonprofits through examples and real-world experience. We will also explore how social enterprise fits into (and enhances) the traditional nonprofit structure and the questions you should ask to help decide if social enterprise is right for your nonprofit.

Congratulations, Lauren Painter!
Young Leaders Council board member, Lauren Painter, was recently promoted to Director of Financial Operations at Lee Company – we congratulate her on this new venture! Her responsibilities with Lee will be publication of financials and strategic planning, budgeting and forecasting processes, and assisting business units with P&L management and financial analysis – just to name a few. Lauren is an active and instrumental part of the YLC board and also on the boards of W.O. Smith Music School and Middle TN Construction Financial Management Association.

YLC Holiday Party – December 11, 2019

We celebrated in style at the 2019 YLC Holiday Party on December 11, in the East Nashville home of Dana Blickwedel and Jim Hoobler. We enjoyed the company of old friends and new ones. Catering for the evening was provided by Bacon & Caviar — a Nashville favorite! Over 50 guests enjoyed a fabulous collection of antique and art pieces curated by Dana and Jim, in which many local artists are featured. It was truly a celebration of the rich foundation of arts, leadership, and influence in Nashville — and it is our great privilege at YLC to be acquainted with so many leaders in our community.

Alumni Spotlight: Dana Blickwedel (Class 17)
Dana Blickwedel, YLC graduate of Class 17, is our honored guest in the Alumni Spotlight of the Winter Newsletter. He is a seasoned professional in all things business strategy and currently serves as Vice President at Tennessee Craft, an organization that supports the growth of artists in Tennessee.
Dana opened his home for the YLC Christmas Party December 11, and we are delighted to feature Dana in our Winter Newsletter as well. Get to know a little more about Dana and his experiences since graduating the YLC program.
How has YLC positively impacted you since you graduated the program?
It has broadened my exposure to the many opportunities there are to make a positive impact to our community. By becoming involved with community organizations I was able to improve my leadership skills and appreciate different perspectives that I might not otherwise have encountered.
Have you served on boards since you graduated and which ones?
Tennessee Craft Board, Past Treasurer, Current Vice Chair; Belmont Mansion Board; Belmont Foundation Board, Treasurer; St. Ann’s Episcopal Church Vestry; St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Vestry
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and from whom?
Take ownership of your mistakes and learn from them.
What book have you most recently read and loved?
Read AND loved? That is a tough one. Though not particularly recent, I would say “Boys in the Boat.”
What are three things you can’t live without?
Easy……Faith, Hope, & Love.

Fall Leadership Luncheon 2019

Young Leaders Council celebrated 24 years of Leadership Luncheons on Friday November 8 at the Music City Center. It was a grand gathering of 510 of our friends from all over our city. Corporate partners, nonprofit friends, and many YLC alum attended the anticipated luncheon to hear from one of Nashville’s rising leaders, Ian Ayre, CEO of the Nashville Soccer Club. We shared a meal, honored our Young Leader of the Year Award recipient, and enjoyed a conversation with Ian Ayre. We count it a privilege to congregate with Nashville’s greatest professionals to hear about our growing city!
Every year, YLC honors one distinguished Young Leader in the community for outstanding leadership qualities and accomplishments, along with significant board service in for organizations in our community. Our esteemed 2019 nominees were Sydney Ball, 2016 YLC Williamson Class, Tyler Graham, 2017 YLC Massey Class, and Charlane Oliver, 2013 YLC Junior League Class.
We were pleased to present the winning award to Charlane Oliver of The Equity Alliance, and we congratulate our nominees for their service to our community. We thank Ron Snitker, 2018 recipient, for presenting the award.

Charlane Oliver graduated the 2013 Junior League class, and is recognized as a “Now Generation Activist” by The Tennessean and a “2019 NBJ Woman of Influence.” She co-founded of The Equity Alliance, a nonprofit empowering, equipping and mobilizing black voters to be engaged in the civic process in Tennessee. Charlane currently serves on board of Metro Nashville Emergency 911 Communications, Purpose Prep Academy, and Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee. She has also been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, The Tennessean, and more.
YLC board member, Santi Tefel, led an intriguing conversation with Ian Ayre, which was a highlight for attendees. Ian shared experiences from his childhood, career in major league sports, and vision for the MLS team here in Nashville with guests.

Ian Ayre has been tasked with building the entire Nashville Soccer Club from the ground up, following the award of an MLS franchise to Nashville in 2017. Born in Liverpool, England, he has been a soccer fan since his early years and followed Liverpool all over the world as a fan and employee. His background includes 10 years of active military service in the British Royal Navy and professional experience in consumer electronics. He was also involved in the takeover of Huddersfield Town Football Club, serving as Chairman & Chief Executive of the club. In 2007, Ian returned to the UK to take up a role at Liverpool Football Club where he rebuilt the club at all levels. We were pleased to welcome him to the Nashville community with a the YLC Leadership Luncheon.
