El Jardin de los Niños, East Nashville (The Children’s Garden), a parents day out program at Woodland Presbyterian Church, exists to provide a safe and supportive Spanish language focused preschool option for the Nashville community. The goal of the program is to meet the intellectual, social and developmental needs of each child while simultaneously teaching students about environmental and global responsibility. The program is currently in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status and is looking for board members. Here is a great opportunity for YLC alumni or upcoming class participants to offer their skills and resources in the very early stages of this emerging nonprofit. Better Decisions was started as a program under the umbrella of other nonprofits in 1985 before being as incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1999. Its mission is to teach and foster decision-making and life-planning skills among women who are incarcerated to reduce recidivism among female offenders and to break the inter-generational cycle of crime by teaching women (most of whom are mothers) how to gain more control over their lives by setting goals, deciding rather than reacting, and making and sticking to concrete plans for changing their attitudes and behaviors. The nonprofit is looking for board members with skills in legal, accounting/finance, social science research (non-medical), media/publishing or general. If interested, contact board member Erika Tennant at tennant.erika@gmail.com or (814) 442-3648. To learn more about Better Decisions, visit the website here.
